Camping!

This past weekend, students had the opportunity to go camping at a variety of locations. Some chose to stay on campus while others decided on a relaxing weekend out on Seton Lake. Another group went canoeing at Nahatlatch Lakes near Boston Bar. Others hiked up to Stryen Cabin on the west side of the river. The same group that hiked to the summit of Mt. Blustry last weekend decided to make a summit attempt on Mt. Roach, an 8600 ft. mountain west of Lytton. The group made a stop at Stryen Cabin and continued into the "high country." Unfortunately, due to lack of proper equipment and poor conditions, the group only made it as high as 7800 ft. Overall, it was an epic weekend with beautiful weather that students and staff enjoyed immensely.

Group of Students and Staff Summit Mt. Blustry

This past weekend, a small group of students and staff summited Mt. Blustry, a 7600 ft. mountain just  a few kilometres north of the school. It's possibly the first time in many years that Fountainview students have hiked to the top of this beautiful mountain, the highest in the Clear Range.

"We made sure we were well prepared with GPS navigators and warm clothing.  Four amateur radio operators were on the trip: NA7CW, KF7TJT, KJ6TKN, and KK4DSL.
With their small handheld radios they took advantage of the impressive "line of sight" at the summit and made contact with other operators, some as far as 200 miles away.
When we arrived at the summit, the thermometer read 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The wind chill was probably below freezing. The views were amazing and we were able to see the hills surrounding Kelowna, approximately 120 miles away. To stay out of the wind, we hunkered down behind a pile of rocks and enjoyed the stunning scenery. On our descent, we decided we had the appropriate gear and made the decision to spend the night at a lower elevation (our original plan was only for a day hike.). After descending to 5800 feet we built a lean-to shelter and a fire in the woods.  We ate a delicious dinner of spaghetti, beans, cinnamon rolls, and pita chips. Without sleeping bags, we insulated our shelter with pine boughs and any other materials we could find. At about 7:15 the next morning, we packed our gear and hiked back to the truck. Despite the cool temperatures that night, it was an amazing trip that's totally worth doing again!"

Sophomore Health Assignment Completed

Health in English class? Recently, the sophomore class completed an English 10 assignment entitled 18 Days of Health and Fitness. For 18 days, they ate healthy food, got plenty of exercise, drank plenty of water, and got enough sunlight, fresh air, and sleep. The assignment included watching various health and fitness documentaries as well as keeping a daily journal of their own research and experiences. Terminating in a three-page composition regarding their findings, this assignment reminded the students how important health and fitness really is. These were the requirements:

  • Nutrition: A total vegan diet with as much raw food as possible. NO refined sugar, NO junk food and NO fried foods.
  • Exercise: At least two 15 minute workouts per day.
  • Water: Your weight in pounds divided by two = the minimum number of ounces you need to drink per day. (For example, if you weigh 100 pounds, then you need to drink 50 ounces of water per day. That is at least 6.25 cups of water.)
  • Sunlight: Get plenty of sunlight and eat as many meals outside as you can.
  • Temperance: Self-control!
  • Air: We will aim to get outside every day to breathe fresh air.
  • Rest: 8 hours or more of sleep per night. You should be in bed sleeping by 10:00 P.M.
  • Trust in Divine Power: Meaningful daily devotions.

Stepping outside behind the English classroom, you may be surprised to find the sophomores out on the grassy lawn, acting like ladybugs that have been flipped over on their backs doing crunches. Or maybe they look like baby birds that are struggling to take off in their first flight as they do arm circles and calf-raises. For the last 18 days, we've been learning more about what it was like for Daniel when he was faced with the king's table. We've been carefully choosing what we eat, and making sure we're drinking plenty of water. In addition, we've been in the warm sunshine, getting fresh air, learning more about our bodies and what's good for them, and learning to trust God even more. By participating in this assignment, we've also been an encouragement to others here on campus, and even to those at home, by encouraging them to try out a healthier diet and an energetic exercise program for themselves. We’ve been reminded that we are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we're all excited to lead healthier lives for our Heavenly Father.

Spring Filming - Day 3

Wednesday, May 9, we were scheduled to film another three songs at a few locations on our campus. Unfortunately, it was too windy and we couldn't film. At around 7:00 Wednesday morning, the deans announced a normal school day and we proceeded with work and classes throughout the day.

To make up for Wednesday, we filmed on Thursday with blue skies and calm winds. Our first song of the day was filmed down on the bank of the Fraser River. The next two songs were filmed in the apple orchard on campus.

Spring Filming - Day 2

Tuesday, May 8, we filmed out on cold and beautiful Seton Lake. We transported people and gear by boat to a beach on the opposite shore where we filmed two songs. Unfortunately, due to boat issues and fuel problems, not everyone arrived back on campus until late that night. Despite the difficulties, God blessed and we had an amazing day filming out on the lake.

Spring Filming - Day 1

We have begun filming part two ("Spring") of our latest production, a four part series, entitled God So Loved the World

Monday, May 7, was day one of filming the "Spring" segment at the Kumsheen Rafting Resort, near Skihist Provincial Park.

Spring Picnic

It's that time of year... The trees are budding again and the flowers are finally blooming. Time for our annual spring picnic...

On Sunday, May 6, everyone had an awesome time socializing with friends and eating good food in the apricot orchard. The warm, sunny weather made it a perfect day for a picnic. Afterwards, we gathered around, sang some songs, and Mr. Lemon gave the worship talk. Thanks to the kitchen staff for all their hard work and those great lemon tarts!

MG Time Lapse

This is a time lapse video put together by a student at the carrot barn during harvest time. The tractors going by have come in from the fields with a load of carrots to be unloaded by the forklift. The bins are then wrapped and stored in the barn.

" Agriculture is the ABC of industrial education..."

The statement "Agriculture is the ABC of industrial education" (2MR 74) is very familiar to many educators in Adventist schools. At Fountainview Academy we are taking this concept to heart by expanding our agriculture program to include 10,000 square-feet of unheated greenhouses. Our desire is to grow more of our own food for use in our cafeteria, and we are also planning to sell a wider variety of produce on the retail market.

In April of last year, a group of our staff traveled to northern Alberta to disassemble 32,000 square-feet of used greenhouses for our farm. The current 10,000 square-feet we are putting up now is just the beginning. This year we will also grow a variety of crops in the field just behind our school building.

Please check our website from time-to-time for updates on our progress toward making the agriculture program a more prominent part of our school.

Sun Run

I still ask myself why I would pay money to go into a major city and run 10 kilometers in a crowd of almost 50,000 people. Those are things I try to avoid. No matter how practically I looked at it, I still had a burning desire to run a race and apparently I was not the only one.

On April 15, a group of 21 students and staff headed to Vancouver along with thousands of other people with the goal to run Canada's largest 10k race. It was obvious that half the city was headed to the same place we were. Almost every person we saw on our way into the city was dressed in brightly colored running shoes, track pants, and a bib number. With nervousness and anticipation we stood in the crowded street and waited for twenty minutes after the first runners left the starting line before our group was sent on our way. More than half the crowd was behind us too. The clouds kept the sun off our backs, but it brought a mild wind for us to run against. As long as we kept up a good pace, we were warm.
The staff at Fountainview Academy strive to educate our students to develop an active, healthy lifestyle. Exercise is definitely a vital part of health. Running this race created motivation, determination and dedication to get outside and exercise. It was encouraging to see students consistently exercising in preparation for this race. The real excitement came after the race when many of our students and staff saw that they had beaten the goals they had set for themselves. Set a goal, you never know what might happen!
